Information Technology

In order to complete a Kaplan Continuing Education online career training program, students need a personal computer (PC) with a modem and access to the Internet. This program incorporates the use of email, discussion board postings, and navigation of the Internet for Web Field Trips. The use of Microsoft® Word documents for a Learning Journal is recommended.


The following system requirements are the minimum necessary to access the curriculum:

Hardware:

  • A computer capable of running Windows 7, Windows XP or Vista, or Mac OS X* with the operating system’s minimum requirements for processor, memory, and hard drive (See the Microsoft or Apple website for minimum requirements)
    *Medical Coding Certificate students may not use Mac computers.
  • At least 10.0 GB of free hard-drive space (additional space may be needed for multimedia files)
  • 1024 x 768 monitor with a 16-bit or greater video card (24-bit preferred)
  • DVD-ROM drive or CD-ROM drive (Medical Coding Certificate students are required to have both)
  • A dedicated, reliable 128 Kbps or faster Internet connection
  • PC capable of playing sound with speakers

Software:

  • Microsoft Windows operating system (XP or Vista) or Mac OS X (Medical Coding Certificate students may not use Mac OS X)
  • Microsoft Word 2000 or more recent version
  • Adobe Reader—latest version, click here

    • Internet Explorer 7.0 only
    • Firefox latest version (may not be used with Medical Coding Certificate program)
    • Safari latest version
  • A current antivirus and antispyware application that is updated regularly

 Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) Windows Server 2008 Administration: Computer with 1.6 GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM, 32 GB free hard drive space, and Windows Server 2008 Operating System (comes with textbook associated with program)
