Information Technology
In order to take Kaplan University online classes, students need a personal computer (PC) with a modem and access to the Internet. This program incorporates the use of email, discussion board postings, and navigation of the Internet for Web field trips. The use of Microsoft® Word documents for a Learning Journal is recommended.
Hardware
- A PC capable of running Windows XP or Vista, or Mac OS X
- 512 MB RAM or greater (1 GB recommended)
- 3.0 to 10.0 GB of free hard-drive space (additional space may be needed for multimedia files)
- 1024 x 768 monitor with a 16-bit or greater video card (24-bit preferred)
- DVD-ROM drive or CD-ROM drive
- DSL or cable modem preferred (minimum of 56.6 Kbps modem)
- Sound card with speakers and microphone (for selected courses)
Software
- Microsoft Windows operating system (XP or Vista) or Mac OS X
- Adobe Reader 7.0 or greater (available on the Internet at www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
- Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater, Firefox 2.0 or later, or Safari 2.0 or greater
- A current antivirus application
- Adobe Flash Player 9.0 or greater (free download on the Internet)
- Sun Java 1.5 or greater (free download on the Internet)

To work through lab exercises, Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator Certificate and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer Certificate students will also need access to the following:
- Windows Server 2003 on a network with other computers
- Active Directory with administrator rights
- Windows XP with administrator rights
- Windows Vista with administrator rights
Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist Certificate and Microsoft Certified Professional Developer Certificate students will require Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. Microsoft Certified Professional Developer Certificate Web development and enterprise application development track students will also require Internet Information Services (IIS) configured with administrator rights. Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist Certificate Windows Vista configuration track students will require Windows Vista with administrator rights.
